Baskets are hand woven by artisans around the ancient city of Antakya, historically known as Antioch in southern Turkey. Wheat baskets have been woven in Antakya for centuries. The wheat is gathered from the region during harvest season. After the picking and cleaning stage, the wheat is colored and dried, to then be soaked again to start the weaving process. It is believed that the weaving technique used to weave the Antakyan baskets is inherited from Ancient Egypt dating back 5000 years.
